The Dollar Tree store on Bennet Drive in Caribou at dusk. This little strip mall is currently owned by Dana Cassidy. The property has been the subject of some local Facebook controversy lately. A few of the businesses that lease space in the strip mall and local residents who have an apparent interest in such matters have sparred with Dana over the state of the sprinkler system and the resulting closure of some of those businesses.
Here are a few photos of Caribou last Tuesday. It was around dusk and there were some specific photos I wanted to take — local businesses on Bennet Drive at dusk, when there is still some daylight, but all the storefronts and signs are lit (those that are still open after 8pm).
I started at the intersection of River Road and Route 161.This photo has been editing to alter the black point, highlighting the details on the moon.I’ve crossed this bridge thousands of times by car. There is something special about walking over a bridge and taking time to observe all the little details. I used to do this a lot more as a younger person, but I still like to get out there on foot every once in a while. This is a shot of the steeple atop the current Seventh Day Adventist church on South Main street which, according to their website, focuses on the faith of Jesus Christ and their FREE seminar about the best-selling book, “30 Days to Natural Blood Pressure Control”….through Jesus….I guess. I’m not particularly religious, but this seems like more of a platform for recruitment or subscription sales than a church. It’s a pretty building, though. This church has lights installed to illuminate its steeple at night. It’s just a bunch of spotlights bolted to the steeple, not one of those fancy grail-shaped beacons used to warn travelers about seriously perilous churches. And now I finally got around to taking the photos I set out to take in the first place. Here is our local Walgreens, formerly Rite-Aid. I’m not sure if this building was originally a Rite-Aid or if it was something else and later converted to a Rite-Aid. Leave a comment if you know. Here is something people always have an interest in knowing: the price of gasoline at a particular point in time. Here you go.We’re close enough to the Canadian border that Tim Hortons has a foothold in our town. As a Canadian myself, I’m ashamed to report that I never get coffee here. Honestly, the coffee tends to be a bit expensive, and I have to wait in a drive-thru line that often extends out into the street. This just feels like one of those photos that someone will be looking at decades later and say something like “Oh wow, I remember when there were businesses on Bennet Drive. Remember when cars still ran on gasoline!?”
