Walkin’ ‘Round ‘Bou

Honestly I had never heard anyone call this town “‘Bou” until Kim posted it on Facebook yesterday. It’s kind of a cute name for this town.

Anyway, Kim and I went for a walk with Jeannie around Caribou yesterday. We started off at the park near Collins Pond (is it still called a “pond” since its been drained?) and followed the walking trail loop.

Right off the trail is a small dirt path that leads to the remains of an old mill that used to feature quite prominently in the community. Now it’s just a haven for kids honing their artistic talents or weird old guys with cameras.

The mill was located just below a small waterfall in Caribou Stream (see this article for more images slightly downstream).

An item of clothing appeared to be tied around the end of a piece of rebar nearby. I have no idea what to make of it.

There are some other interesting relics kept around the park as well. I think this must be part of the old mill…

As we progressed, we found several side-paths that led to secret hideaways, like this little campfire on the bank just upstream from the old mill.

Continuing down the path, we crossed the walking bridge that took us over the stream. Years ago we used this path to take Marcus to the playground, riding his little bicycle, still on training wheels. We lived in town back then.

As we made our way around the loop and back to our car, Kim left little art nuggets in various places for people to find. The pebbles are from the Aroostook River and are hand painted by her.

Overall it was a very pleasant walk around town. Like any other place, Caribou is much more interesting when you take your time and examine all the worn and crumbling bits up close, as well as the nice things.
