Caribou in 50mm

·

,

Today I decided to wander around town for a bit and take some photos with my 50mm prime lens. I have several lenses but only one prime lens. All the rest are zoom lenses of varying focal lengths — everything from 10mm to 250mm. The prime lens offers a much sharper image at the expense of variable focal lengths.

Kim asked me to get some shots of the Black-eyed Susan flowers just down the road from us, so that was my first stop.

I proceeded into town and parked by the old Caribou Mall. The parking lot was almost entirely empty — it’s Sunday afternoon, after all. My plan was to walk a little circle around the downtown area.

I love the texture of the parts of the retaining wall that are made of metal and have rusted over time. I’m sure they have a name but I have no idea what it is.

Making my way up and around to Herschel Street, I walked along the top of the retaining wall. On the way I spotted a couple of objects on the ground that seemed a little out of place.

I’ve always been tempted to pick up stray potatoes off the side of the road and bring them home. Haven’t done it yet — too afraid of being hospitalized for food poisoning.

I accidentally took this photo of a dog that appears to be driving a car. I was trying to get a shot of the Caribou Municipal Building.

Next on the tour was the statue of a majestic looking caribou — the town’s namesake — with its recently rebuilt base. As you will see, the statue is pretty realistic.

In case you’re wondering, yes, it is anatomically correct. Somebody spent some time finessing those details into shape.

There are a lot of old and historic buildings in downtown Caribou. In fact, there seems to be little else but old buildings, ranging from roughly as old as me to really, really old.

The building I used to work in a long time ago has been pretty much vacant for several years. This was the Caribou office for ATX Forms many years ago. I worked for ATX from 2002 to 2011.

Kim worked in the Quality Assurance department at ATX. That’s how we first met.

Despite the dismal air quality due to wildfire smoke from Canada and mostly overcast skies, it was a pretty nice walk through town.

I love that fact that when we slow things down by walking that the world can look very different and details that we overlook when driving by fast in our vehicles don’t get realized. Thanks for showing seeing these details and sharing them so we’ll.
